‘Light in the Piazza’ to shine on PBS

NEW YORK – “The Light in the Piazza” will find its way to public television before it finishes its New York stage run.

The musical, which won six 2005 Tony Awards, will be telecast June 15 by PBS as part of its “Live From Lincoln Center” series. The show, which has a score by Adam Guettel and a book by Craig Lucas, stars Victoria Clark as a Southern matron on an Italian vacation with her daughter. It is based on a novella by Elizabeth Spencer.

“The Light in the Piazza” originated as a production of the Seattle Repertory Theatre.

The play is scheduled to close July 2 at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater after a run of more than a year. A national tour is expected to begin in August.

Clark won a Tony Award for her performance and the show also won prizes for its score, orchestrations, sets, costumes and lighting. Also in the cast are Katie Clarke, Aaron Lazar, Chris Sarandon, Patti Cohenour, Sarah Uriarte Berry, Michael Berresse and Beau Gravitte.
