Two shows tout ‘Babar’ and Disney

Published 3:37 pm Thursday, February 5, 2009

Two concerts on the same day.

“Babar the Elephant” is a classic children’s story set to music.

“A Tribute to Walt Disney” delivers musical hits from a variety of favorite childhood films.

How do you choose which one to take the kids to?

No worries. Though the concerts are both planned for Saturday they are at different times. So it’s conceivable to go to both.

Both concerts take place at Edmonds Center for the Arts in Edmonds.

It’s rare to find a classic children’s story that has been set to music, so the chance to listen to “Babar, the Elephant,” with music played by the Cascade Symphony Orchestra, is a special treat for kids, Dave Dolacky said.

Dolacky, theater manager at Mountlake Terrace High School, will narrate “Babar.” He’s looking forward to using his booming broadcaster voice to keep the kids’ attention.

“Being a dad to two grown children, I remember well what it takes to make a kid interested in a story,” Dolacky said.

And, Dolacky said, “Babar” has a great track record.

“It’s so classic that you can never go wrong with it,” he said.

Though the Cascade Symphony Concert features “The Story of Babar, the Little Elephant” by Jean de Brunhoff as set to music by Francis Poulenc, there’s another piece on the program.

A special appearance is planned by Bellevue violinist Amelia Sie, 12, who will be performing the third movement of the “Violin Concerto No. 3” by Camille Saint-Saens. She began playing the violin at the age of 4.

She made her solo debut with the Musicians Emeritus Symphony Orchestra in 2005. Amelia also served as associate principal second violin in the Seattle Youth Symphony Organization’s Debut and Junior Symphonies. In April 2008, she performed with Bellevue Philharmonic Orchestra as a winner of the Young Artist Debut Concerto Competition.

Saturday’s second, evening concert is being put on by the Sno-King Community Chorale and is a tribute to Walt Disney. Jazz and gospel vocalist Dee Daniels is the featured special guest.
