Necessity is the mother of invention, or so the saying goes. For Kendra Montgomery and Darnesha Weary, it was the need in their community for more black-focused events and opportunities that inspired them to start their special event-planning company, Pitch Black Entertainment in 2021.
Since then they’ve worked on a variety of private and public events that help cultivate and bring together the Black community in Snohomish County.
“When we started Pitch Black Entertainment there really weren’t any events or opportunities specifically for the Black community in Snohomish County to come together for networking, celebration or simply to support one another, which was unfortunate because there are a lot of us here in the Pacific Northwest ,” Montgomery says. “So we decided to change that.”
Montgomery and Weary specialize in event planning such as holiday and cultural events that cultivate and celebrate Black culture. Many of these events often act as networking opportunities for Black-owned businesses in the area, and an opportunity for businesses to raise awareness of their offerings, through door prizes and give-aways, for example.
“These events are not just an opportunity to celebrate our culture and community,” Weary says. “They offer a safe place for the Black community & Black business owners big or small – to network and gain support. We believe that we can succeed or fail together, and that we’re stronger when we are supporting one another.”
Pitch Black Entertainment has worked closely with many non-profit organizations like Change the Narrative, Grounded of Black Coffee NW, Snohomish County Black Heritage Committee and Project Mentoring program to plan community events like their recent Juneteenth celebration in Marysville, and many more that are in the works.
“We have quite a few upcoming events, including a Jetty Island community event, a Woodland Park Zoo trip where we’ll be providing free admission, snacks and group activities,” Montgomery says. “We also have a very special West Coast to East Coast music showcase coming up this fall that will feature local talent and provide them with resources to connect with radio stations, publishers and production companies to help get them on the path to success.
