The weather may be cool and wet right now, but the warmer months, perfect for enjoying a beautiful new outdoor living space, are right around the corner.
“If you plan on adding an outdoor living space to your home, the time to start is when the weather’s not great,” says Tony Collins, owner of Northlight Custom Builders. “There’s a process to getting the ball rolling, so now is the time to get started with design and permitting.”
Collins is a master craftsman who, after graduating from Central Washington University as a finance major, worked for the city of Edmonds for over 23 years – always with a passion for building.
“Even while I was working for the city, I would work on construction projects with a friend of mine,” says Collins. “I founded Northlight Custom Builders in 2014, after realizing that construction is my true passion.”
Northlight is a design to build company, taking projects from start to finish, specializing in custom home remodels, additions and outdoor living spaces.
“An outdoor living space can be a great addition for using otherwise under-utilized space,” Collins says. “It’s an affordable option to add square footage to your home for entertaining and relaxing.”
Outdoor living space options can include:
- Covered patio/deck conversions
- Additional entertainment space
- Heaters
- Kitchenettes
- TV & entertainment
- Fireplaces
- Lighting
Northlight’s designs incorporate beautiful materials that mesh with the outdoors, in a half home/half outside connection to the outdoors that maximizes and integrates the view into the project design.
“One of the most unique outdoor living spaces we’ve designed and built is a golf course home in Seattle,” Collins says. “We created an outdoor elevated deck structure with a tile floor extended over the pool, and wrapped around the complex geometry of the house. It’s a great incorporation into the natural landscape, and we built a beautiful pool house to go with it.”
Collins’ advice to home-owners thinking about adding an outdoor living space is to consider how the space will be used.
“You need to think about how many people you want to entertain, what types of materials to use if you have pets, whether you’re cooking or heating in the space, and how it will affect the existing structure of the house.
Collins also urges anyone considering an outdoor living space to start talking through their plan with them right now, “so we can get you on our schedule and get it completed in time for summer use!”
