YMCA Camp Casey: A new chapter for overnight camp

Beginning in January, Whidbey Island’s Camp Casey will be part of the YMCA of Snohomish County

The YMCA of Snohomish County is excited to announce the acquisition of Whidbey Island’s historic Camp Casey. Starting in January 2025, this 75-acre waterfront destination will serve as the permanent home for its Overnight Camp, offering kids transformative experiences that inspire growth, confidence and lasting friendships.

For nearly 70 years, it has been a place of discovery and connection for thousands of youth and families. Now, as part of the YMCA, Camp Casey will continue this legacy of serving the community while expanding its impact with intentional programming.

YMCA Camp Casey is more than just a location,” says Peyton Tune, President and CEO, YMCA of Snohomish County. “It’s the heart of our Overnight Camp experience – a place where lives are transformed, confidence is built and tomorrow’s changemakers are inspired. This acquisition ensures we can continue providing life-changing opportunities for youth and families, fostering growth and connection for generations to come.”

Why Overnight Camp Matters

For Ellie, a repeat YMCA camper, the decision to return to camp for a second year was easy. “Last summer’s camp was one of the best weeks of my life,” she shares. “I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard. When I came home, my parents told me, ‘Wow, you’re a totally different person.’”

This story is not unique. Overnight camps like those at YMCA Camp Casey provide a space where kids can unplug from daily pressures, connect with peers and challenge themselves in new ways. According to the American Camp Association, 74 percent of campers develop leadership skills, 70 percent of parents report improved confidence in their children, and 78 percent of campers feel better equipped to face challenges.

At Overnight Camp at YMCA Camp Casey, fun and growth go hand-in-hand. Activities like team-building activities, outdoor adventures and group challenges foster resilience and independence. Campers learn to navigate friendships, conquer fears and discover their potential. Ellie sums it up perfectly: “This camp brings out the best in everyone. It’s a place where you can just be yourself.”

A legacy of community and growth

By acquiring Camp Casey, the YMCA is not just preserving a historic site but reimagining it as a hub for youth development, leadership and wellness. In addition to Overnight Camp, the Y will bring programs and activities for all ages to the Whidbey Island community, including youth sports, day camp, swim lessons and more.

The property will also continue to be a regional destination for conferences, retreats and gatherings. New experiences and amenities will go beyond just inspiring campers, benefiting the community as a whole.

For families seeking an unforgettable and impactful summer for their child, YMCA Camp Casey promises a place where kids can find achievement, friendship, and belonging.
