MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — A concrete wall panel fell onto a construction worker along I-5 at the site of the in-progress Mountlake Terrace light rail segment, leaving him in critical condition Thursday, authorities said.
Around 11:53 a.m., the concrete fell on the worker near 212th Street SW and I-5, said Shawneri Guzman, community outreach manager for South County Fire. The man, who is in his 40s, was working on a retaining wall for the light rail project at the ground level.
John Gallagher, a spokesperson for Sound Transit, identified the worker as a carpenter in an email.
“Our thoughts are with the worker and his family,” Gallagher wrote. “We will be working closely with the contractor and relevant authorities to investigate the incident and identify appropriate responses.”
First responders extricated the worker. He was being taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Guzman said.
Guzman said early reports indicate he sustained “traumatic injuries.”
He was in critical condition, said Susan Gregg, a spokesperson for the hospital.
Sound Transit is currently working on expanding light rail from its current last stop at Northgate in Seattle into south Snohomish County. The stations in Mountlake Terrace and Lynnwood are slated to open in 2024.
