It will cost a little more to dump garbage at Snohomish County’s transfer stations beginning next month, though fees for yard debris will go down.
The minimum garbage fee at solid-waste transfer stations will increase to $20 from $17 on March 1. That fee applies for up to 360 pounds of garbage. The per-ton rate will rise to $105 from $89.
The fee increase is the first in Snohomish County since 1992, county spokesman Christopher Schwarzen said in a release. For the past 17 years, the county avoided fees by subsidizing operating costs with money from land sales.
For yard debris and clean wood, the minimum cost for disposing of up to 500 pounds will be lowered to $11 from $17. The cost per ton will drop to $45 from $89.
Residents, small businesses and charities can continue to recycle electronics such as computers, monitors and TVs free.
Snohomish County has three transfer stations and five neighborhood centers known as “drop boxes.” For more information, go to www.snoco.org and search for “solid waste” or call 425-388-3425.
