ARLINGTON — A centennial celebration of the historic Trafton School building is set for 4 p.m. Saturday at the school near the intersection of Jim Creek Road and Highway 530.
Though established in 1888, the original school was lost in a fire. The current building was completed in 1912.
The Arlington School District voted to shut down the school in 2010. When it closed in August that year, it was considered the oldest continually operating small public school in the state. About 135 students attended the school.
District officials said at the time that decreased state funding created a budget deficit, and that the district stood to save more than $258,000 a year by not operating an elementary school at Trafton.
In the past couple of years, the Trafton School building has been used as a community center.
The celebration Saturday includes a light meal, music and time to share pictures, memorabilia and memories of the school.
