SNOHOMISH — Flowing Lake Park will see major changes beginning in September.
The Snohomish County Council last week approved about $2 million in updates to the park’s entrance.
Right now, the park has one entrance lane and one exit lane. On a busy summer day, principal park planner Sharon Swan said cars will back up down the street.
The entrance will be widened to two lanes. The project will also add a ranger station at the park’s entrance.
Finding Flowing Lake as-is can be confusing, Swan said.
With the updates, visitors will pass the ranger station as they arrive at the park.
“Its just going to make it a lot easier to get to rangers to ask questions,” Swan said.
The current ranger station is aging and not accessible for those with mobility issues, she said.
About $500,000 of the project costs were paid by the state Recreation and Conservation Office. The county is covering the rest with money generated by a tax on property sales.
Swan said the improvements also will help prepare for the park’s eventual expansion.
In 2014, the county parks and recreation department bought an additional 157 acres adjacent to Flowing Lake Park, adding to the previously 38-acre space. Swan said the department plans to extend the park onto that acreage in the future.
Work at Flowing Lake Park is set to begin in mid-September and be completed by Memorial Day in 2020.
The park will be open throughout construction with intermittent closures. Check the Snohomish County parks website for updates.
