Believe it or not, there is opposition to a new racetrack

Wednesday in The Herald, I saw an example of irresponsible, biased reporting. Your article, prominently displayed on the front page, described only the support for the proposed NASCAR facility, not the opposition. Your only quote from a resident was from a person who wants to sell his land and move, which he thinks will happen with the coming of the facility. That person will be long gone, while residents remaining will be forced to live with the tremendous noise and traffic congestion resulting from the facility. Again, in your Opinion section, yours was prominently displayed at the top of the page; no letters in opposition were displayed.

I am one of hundreds of residents of the Gleneagle golf course community in south Arlington who are opposed to the construction of a NASCAR facility approximately a mile from our homes. The noise and traffic congestion resulting from the facility will tremendously and detrimentally affect the quality of lives of residents here. Your articles did not so much as mention the noise caused by the facilities. Can you possibly think that auto racing is a quiet activity? Or are you afraid that if you mention it, you’ll learn of more opposition?

At the recent annual meeting of the Gleneagle Country Club Association, attended by approximately 200 homeowners, a poll reflected that the vast majority (approximately 95 percent) of those attending were opposed to the NASCAR facility being constructed in the area south of the Arlington Airport. Based on that overwhelming opposition, homeowners formed a committee that is now in the process a formulating a petition which we fully expect to be signed by a tremendous majority of Gleneagle residents. After making the rounds of the Gleneagle community, we plan to expand into other nearby communities, where we expect to find similar opposition to the proposed site along 51st Avenue.

I hope that The Herald will publish reports of the NASCAR opposition, not only NASCAR support.
