Many politicians have said that the electoral college should be abolished, that it’s not democratic! So let me suggest a pragmatic way of democratizing it without changing the Constitution. This idea has already been done in two states, and it restores to the electoral college a sense of the popular vote.
In Maine and Nebraska, each House district’s electoral vote is given to the presidential winner of that district, instead of “winner takes all.” This gives the electoral vote a more democratic enhancement. It could be changed by legislative law or by state initiative.
Why this doesn’t happen is because red and blue states want to give all their electoral votes to the state’s party that is in control. Politicians who cry about the electoral system do so only when their presidential candidate loses. Yet they are loath to actually change the system, which Maine and Nebraska have done. The political whining over the electoral system is, to say the least, disingenuous!
