I oppose the Brightwater Sewage Treatment Plant in Edmonds because I live near downtown Edmonds with a view of the potential sight from my front window. This certainly represents an adverse impact on my personal environment from a sight perspective and, quite likely, a smell perspective. As a citizen of Snohomish County and Edmonds, I deeply resent the fact that I have no say in a representative context about King County coming into my city to make it a repository and processing plant for its human waste matter. Placing this facility in downtown Edmonds makes as much sense as moving the Edmonds facility to a bluff in Ballard next to Shilshole Bay.
That said, I also base my opposition to this facility on the basis of its potential to adversely impact the environment in general. You have the potential for raw sewage (as opposed to treated water coming from an inland plant) being dumped directly into the sensitive salt marsh area below the plant and the bay of Puget Sound in front of the plant. In other words, this plant sighting means raw sewage is being transported though pipes from inland King County communities for processing just ahead of the outfall area. The waste should be processed in an industrial area inland (preferably in King County) and then piped as treated water across land to the outfall area. Keep the smell and potential pollution out of a high quality residential area, city and marine environment.
Make no mistake about it – politically this is King County literally dumping on Snohomish County and all Snohomish County citizens and politicians should be up in arms about it.
