On Feb. 14, 2023, the Marysville School District will have an extremely important measure on the special election ballot.
The school district is asking voters to consider a levy proposition to fund our school district, after two failed measures last spring. Levy funds are the lifeblood of school districts. These funds plug the gap between what the state provides our local school district and what the school district needs to support and educate all of our city’s children.
A successful levy will provide the funds our school district needs to keep and expand athletic programs, keep the Marysville Pilchuck High School community pool open, and enhance school safety and security. In addition, a successful levy will maintain early learning programs, upgrade technology systems and lower class sizes.
We have new school board members and the board has brought in a new superintendent. I have been meeting regularly with Dr. Zac Robbins and the school board and have also had the opportunity to visit a number of classrooms so far this school year. It is encouraging to see some of the fresh ideas and the new direction of our school district. Staff are working hard to increase student engagement, and teachers in the classrooms are changing their instructional practices to meet students’ academic needs.
You can view some videos of our local teachers describing this on the district website at www.msd25.org/page/levy-2023.
Effective schools make our community stronger and more vibrant. I fully support the Marysville School District and encourage our community to vote in support of the upcoming levy that is on on your Feb. 14 ballot.
Jon Nehring is the mayor of Marysville.
