Newspapers need journalists, communities need newspapers, and democracy needs an independent press to thrive. As a long-time subscriber to the Herald, as well as a former columnist, I’m deeply troubled by Carpenter Media Group’s decision to dismiss 12 newsroom employees.
The Herald is a historic, award-winning institution that has covered news in Western Washington for over a century. It doesn’t deserve for outside investors to bleed it dry. Why purchase the press only to destroy it?
Newspaper subscribers are not a western resource that can be exploited. I call upon my fellow subscribers to email chairman Todd Carpenter and voice their disapproval: todd.carpenter@carpentermediagroup.com.
