When I moved to Snohomish in 2002 from West Seattle there were definitely adjustments to made in pace and style of life. For example, I can still recall being impatient at the Snohomish Freddie’s when a cashier took time to catch up with a customer. However, one of my most pleasant surprises was The Herald. I immediately fell in love with the format, columnists and the local reporting of Snohomish County; it had a much more personal feel to what was still “the news of the day.”
Now, larger than the issue of how our local Herald is delivered, is the paramount issue that the Herald continues to inform, report and deliver news and events that are important and relevant to Everett and Snohomish County residents. I’m a 64-year baby boomer that like many have seen some my favorite institutions and entities transform, merge and modify while others slipped away entirely.
I too miss my morning print newspaper, however, when I now view the “morning” Herald on my tablet in the “news print” format, I find I read more of the newspaper; a win I was not expecting. We can all lament on life’s changes, whether good of not so good and though I want to be right about my opinions, what I do know is that when look for the positive, changes are easier to stomach during the transition.
So too is the evolution our Herald newspaper. What I believe to be true is that the Herald is endeavoring to remain in business while continuing a mandate of being relevant, informative and fair with local reporting and content. Some may be even saying “That’s it! I’m cancelling my subscription.” This actually makes me sad, because if/when the day comes that we no longer have our Herald, I know that will be even a sadder day.
I support our local newspaper by maintaining my subscription and donating to the Herald Investigative Journalism Fund. Will I keep the Herald afloat? Not just as one subscriber, but many of us could if we choose to continue support our local newspaper together.
Thanks to all at The Herald who continue to fight the good fight!
