School is a place where young people can begin discovering who they are, not just as sons and daughters, but as individual persons and members of our larger community. Clubs are an ideal way for this to happen (“Marysville School Board proposes parental consent to join LGBTQ clubs,” The Herald, May 11).
Good parenting is not about creating carbon copies of ourselves, but about balancing a foundation of care and support with the freedom for our children to become who they were born to be. My hope is that the Marysville School Board will honor this unique role that schools play in the growth and well-being of our children by allowing free and equitable access to all clubs for all students.
