Support for Trump was about values of evangelical voters

Upon reading Sid Schwab’s recent column (“Did 70M vote for Trump or just to make libs cry,” The Herald, Nov. 7) I was once again reminded that the media still do not understand why white, black and Latino evangelical Christians vote for Trump and the Republican Party.

The vast majority are not in agreement with President Trump’s character, outbursts, etc. However, he has — regardless as to whatever motive — voted in favor of many of the values of the faith community, i.e. Biblical marriage between one man and one woman, allowing live children yet unborn to live and, yes, let live those born through abortion but allowed to die afterward, plus other values. The Democratic Party has, for the most part (there are those more moderate), been intolerant and hostile to these values. It is not that we support President Trump’s personal actions but the alternative is to support a party that is strongly intolerant against these values. That party has left us no choice but to support those values and the party that most represents those values.

The Democratic Party already controls the House and now the presidency. If they win the Senate, which they still could win, it would give them complete control over the laws that are made in our country, which are incompatible with evangelical values. The only protection would be the Supreme Court (one reason it was pushed to have Barrett confirmed) though the court does not pass the laws. It is never good to have one party, whichever party, in control of the government. Our Founders set it up so there would be a balance of power and that is crucial to avoid the “tyranny of the majority.”

Please, media, talk to those of us who represent the black, white and Latino evangelical community so you truly understand where we are coming from and not accuse us of things that are not true. It smacks of slander.
