Climate change is our greatest conservation threat, with two-thirds of North American birds at risk of extinction without swift action. This November, voters can show their support for climate action by voting No on Initiative 2117, a measure that would repeal the state’s Climate Commitment Act (CCA).
The CCA is crucial for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, fostering responsible clean energy development, and protecting vulnerable communities. It funds projects that sequester carbon and promote habitat resilience across diverse ecosystems.
Washington raised $1.82 billion under the CCA in 2023 and another $136 million for the first auction of pollution allowances in March 2024. That money must be used to cut pollution, create jobs, and help communities respond to climate change.
Funding has already gone toward buying electric school buses, free public transit for youth, air quality monitoring, and EV charging. Low and moderate-income families will receive a one-time $200 credit on their residential electricity bill by September 15th.
In Snohomish County, over 100 investments totaling $113 million have been authorized to support salmon restoration, ferry electrification, and other green projects. More funding is on the way, but our communities would lose most of it if I-2117 passes.
That’s why Pilchuck Audubon and nearly all other conservation groups seeking an end to carbon pollution are campaigning against I-2117.
Please join us! Voting No on I-2117 is a vote for the Climate Commitment Act and a vote for the survival of the birds we cherish.
