A soft voice on the line pleads: “Can you help me?”

That caller and soft voice was Evie, a widowed 77-year-old woman whose cupboards were nearly bare and who had heard something about a program called Meals on Wheels.

Each day, seniors and people with disabilities throughout Snohomish County reach out to Homage. Most often, they are hungry, alone, and desperate. They are seeking food, safety, and basic support. What they receive is even more!

A caring staff member quickly helped Evie sign up for home-delivered meals.

Along with a nourishing meal, Evie also received the message: Someone cares, you’re not alone, and you will not be forgotten. Each week, Evie can now depend on her home-delivered meals. She knows she has the nutrition she needs to survive. But more than that, she knows her delivery will bring a visit from someone who cares, and a reminder that she matters.

Evie lives alone and has no family in the area. Like so many of us, the last few years have been scary. Increased fear, isolation, and loss of normalcy have been especially hard on Evie. Her anxiety and fear of the world outside her home became overwhelming.

Through Homage, Evie was also connected with a trained mental health counselor. Her counselor helped her build strategies to cope with her feelings of anxiety and depression. Through weekly phone calls, she noticed her fears gradually decreasing.

Today, Evie feels optimistic about the future. She knows there are people who care about her health and safety. She knows help is just a phone call away.

But none of this would be possible without our caring community of donors, volunteers, and advocates.

Homage relies on donations to ensure seniors like Evie receive uninterrupted services. The generosity of our dedicated community is the reason nourishing meals and lifesaving services can be provided to folks in need each day. It’s because of you, dear reader, that every time an isolated senior reaches out for food, or a helping hand, a caring team member will be right there.
