Chris Mills, left, and Fermin Lopez bring more than 50 combined years of experience working in seafood and meat to their speciality meat and seafood shop, Earth and Ocean.

Mukilteo specialty shop sources premium meat and wild seafood from Pacific Northwest suppliers, all cut and prepared in-house

The Pacific Northwest offers some of the most phenomenal local meat and seafood around, and that diversity is never more apparent than during summer barbecue season.

These gifts from land and sea have fueled amazing restaurants and some truly impressive home chefs.

Few people know that abundance better than Chris Mills and Fermin Lopez. The two friends spent more than 50 years combined working in seafood and meat, and for years they talked about opening a shop of their own: a place built around the products they knew best, sourced the way they believed food should be sourced.

In 2023 Earth & Ocean went from dream to reality as their specialty meat and seafood shop on the Mukilteo Speedway opened its doors.

“Our mission is deeply personal to us. We wanted our customers to have the opportunity to enjoy restaurant-quality products at home, while making a positive impact on the environment and the communities around us,” Lopez says.

“We bring in fresh fish almost daily and we source our meat products from only the best local ranches like Double R Ranch and Snake River Farms. It’s a level of craftsmanship and quality that you just can’t find at the big box stores,” Mills adds.

Mills and Lopez focus not only on providing restaurant-grade meat options and sustainably caught wild seafood, but also on educating the community and dispelling industry myths.

“Farm-raised gets a really bad name and there are some bad farms out there. But there are also farms that are very sustainable and they play an important role in protecting our wild populations,” Mills says.

The shop carries two farm-raised options, both chosen deliberately for their quality and sustainable practices: sashimi-grade Ōra King salmon, raised by an indigenous-owned business out of New Zealand, and Columbia River steelhead.

Taking barbecue season to new heights

Throughout late spring and early autumn, the counter at Earth & Ocean becomes a collaborative space for staff and customers as the team helps match the perfect cut for every occasion.

For Mills and Lopez, their current personal favorites for weekday meals include Kalbi marinated bone-in short ribs, king or sockeye salmon and Ōra King sashimi.

Rounding out the case are their grab-and-go marinated items, crab cakes, salmon and halibut burgers – all made fresh daily, smoked salmon and dips, a variety of wines and an all-local craft beer lineup.

“From the start, our customers have made it clear how much they value talking with our team and knowing where their food comes from,” Mills says. “We know our fishermen and farmers personally, and we proudly share that background with everyone who steps into the shop.”

Earth & Ocean is open Sunday and Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 10100 Mukilteo Speedway, Suite 110 – just a short 15 minute drive from Everett.
