YAKIMA, Wash. – Lauren Coate scored a team-high 17 points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds as Archbishop Murphy held on for a 56-54 win over Columbia (Burbank) Wednesday in the Class 1A girls state tournament.
Archbishop Murphy avenged last year’s first round loss to Columbia at the state tournament. Archbishop Murphy will take on No. 1 seed Brewster at 7:30 p.m. today.
“This team, without any seniors, captured its first state victory,” Archbishop Murphy coach Bill Kelley said. “This team has fantastic heart and effort.”
Archbishop Murphy (21-6) led by seven points, 56-49, with 41 seconds to play before the Coyotes made one final charge.
Katie Turner hit a putback shot with 19 seconds left to pull Columbia (17-8) within five points. Nicole Woods, who led all scorers with 24 points, followed with a 3-pointer to cut it to 56-54 with nine seconds left. However, the Wildcats were able to run out the clock.
“Both teams came out and were playing really well,” Kelley said. “I thought we came out and playing our best basketball all year and we were still down by three after the first quarter, so we knew we were in for a dogfight.”
