Kamiak boys golf

The senior set a school course individual record with a 3-under-par 69 April 4 at Harbour Pointe Golf Club in Mukilteo. Peters recorded six birdies, nine pars and three bogeys during the round.

He said his effort also contributed to a team course record that beat Kamiak’s previous best five-man score by 10 strokes.

Peters, who qualified for the second round of last year’s Class 4A state tournament at Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick, said he has focused on finishing strong this year. He accomplished that goal en route to the 69 last week. After scoring a 37 on the water-hazard filled front nine, he shot a 32 on the back.

Tom Sovay is the PGA teaching professional at Harbour Pointe. He has given Peters lessons the last two years and said he noticed the youngster emerge last spring. “He just kicked it into another gear,” Sovay said of Peters.

One key to Peters’ game is he level-headed approach.

“I wish I was as mentally equipped to play the game as he is at his age,” Sovay said.

Also a devoted student, Peters said he hopes to qualify for a second consecutive state tournament and then play golf at Western Washington University after high school.
