Big week for Husky Hoops

Tonight kicks off a big week for both the men’s and women’s basketball team’s at the UW.

The men hope to pick up their first Pac-10 win at home against Oregon tonight. The Huskies play six of their next eight games at home starting with the Oregon schools, so if they have any hopes of earning a post-season berth, it will probably have to start tonight.

One big thing to watch for is how the Huskies offense responds this weekend. After scoring 52, 55 and 51 points in their three Pac-10 losses, the Huskies need to improve on the offensive end. Someone not named Jon Brockman is going to have to step up their scoring if the Huskies are going to get going. That could mean Ryan Appleby getting back on track after a rough weekend in LA, or it could be time for Quincy Pondexter to show what he can do. Romar noted this week that while he didn’t make a ton of shots, Pondexter started to show last weekend that he is getting more confident. That could be big for the Huskies if he does, because the potential for Pondexter to be a big-time scorer seems to be there.

And speaking of tonight’s game, there are still tickets available for what should be an entertaining, high-scoring game. So for those of you who assumed the Pac-10 games are all sold out like many have been in years past, here’s a chance to see a game live.

One other men’s hoops note, the Feb. 16 game at Oregon State, which had been listed on the schedule as TBA, will start at 4 p.m. and be shown on FSN.

As for the women’s team, they are looking at this week’s trip to Oregon State and Oregon as a chance to move up the Pac-10 standings. Right now it looks like the middle of the conference is up for grabs behind Stanford, Cal and Arizona State, so a couple of wins in Oregon could be big for the Dawgs.
