MOUNT VERNON – Hot hand, cool hand. Both have merit in a pressure cooker.
Clutch 3-point baskets by Ryan Jackson and Justin Burns and steady free-throw shooting by Jake Moore in final minutes of the fourth quarter lifted Mount Vernon to a 55-49 victory over Stanwood in a Western Conference North Division boys basketball game Friday night.
“It was a playoff type game,” Mount Vernon coach Torey Swanson said, sounding relieved. “It’s good to come out with a win.”
Mount Vernon trailed by two points when Jackson and Burns nailed 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to spring the Bulldogs to a five-point lead midway through the fourth quarter.
“They were in the right spots and we got the ball to the right guys,” Swanson said.
Bulldog point guard Jake Moore, who led all scorers with 23 points and added six steals, iced the victory by making nine of 10 free throws in the final minutes.
“It’s good to hit free throws down the stretch to seal it,” Swanson said.
Corey Boon scored 12 points for Mount Vernon (6-1 in division, 9-2 overall).
Stanwood (4-2, 6-4) which led 38-34 through three quarters, was paced by Daes Kaufman who scored nine of his 15 points on 3-pointers.
“He’s an excellent shooter,” Swanson said. “If you give him an open look he’ll knock it down.”
Chris Sains added 11 points for the Spartans.
