Community roundup: ARCA West comes to Evergreen Speedway

Plus, a host of local collegians earn preseason honors, Jake Luton gets released by the Jaguars and more.

The Central Welding Supply 125, which serves as the season finale at Evergreen Speedway, will attempt to run on Saturday, after being bumped postponed last weekend due to weather.

Some of the top stock car racers in the western United States will be in town this weekend when the ARCA Menards Series West holds the NAPA Auto Parts ARCA West 150 Saturday night at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe.

A total of 15 ARCA Menards Series West drivers are currently entered in the race, which takes place on Evergreen’s 5/8-mile track. The list includes current series points leader Jake Drew of Fullerton, California, who won the series’ previous three races.

Prior to the NAPA Auto Parts ARCA West 150, Evergreen’s top local racers will compete in the Central Welding Supply 125, one of the season’s premier races for Pro Late Models. The race takes place on the 3/8-mile track. Naima Lang, the defending Pro Late Models points champion, currently holds a one-point lead over Thomas Stanford.

Three EWU locals named preseason football All-Big Sky

A trio of Snohomish County products who are members of the Eastern Washington University football team were named to the Big Sky Preseason All-Conference Team.

Monroe High School graduate Joshua Jerome, now a junior defensive lineman, was named to the first-team defense. Jerome is coming off a season in which he registered 61 tackles and seven sacks.

Fellow Monroe alum Efton Chism III, now a sophomore receiver, was named to the second-team offense. Last season Chism had 57 receptions for 735 yards and nine touchdowns.

Mariner High School graduate Anthany Smith, now a senior defensive back, was named to the third-team defense. Last season Smith had 38 tackles while appearing in just six games as he missed time because of injury.

Eastern is ranked No. 12 in the preseason FCS coaches poll.

Gunterman named GNAC volleyball preseason POY

Lake Stevens High School graduate Gabby Gunterman, now a senior outside hitter on the Western Washington University volleyball team, was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year by the league’s coaches.

Gunterman is coming off a season in which she averaged 3.24 kills and 3.83 points per set in leading the Vikings to a 25-5 record and a spot in the NCAA Division II national semifinals. For her efforts she was named the GNAC Player of the Year.

Gunterman was one of five Western players named to the Preseason All-Conference Team as the Vikings once again are expected to be a national contender.

Luton waived by NFL’s Jaguars

Former Marysville Pilchuck High School star quarterback Jake Luton was waived by the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday as the team cut its preseason roster from 90 to 85 players.

Luton was originally a sixth-round pick in the 2020 draft by the Jaguars. Luton made three starts for Jacksonville before being waived just before the start of the 2021 season. He spent 2021 primarily on the Seattle Seahawks’ and Miami Dolphins’ practice squads before being re-signed by Jacksonville in February.

Luton’s departure left Jacksonville with Trevor Lawrence, C.J. Beathard and EJ Perry as its quarterbacks.

Pickleball event in Everett

Earlier this year pickleball was named the official state sport, thanks to the efforts of a group of Snohomish County residents.
