Scott Callens, who works as a FlowRider instructor at the Snohomish Aquatic Center, recently claimed both the national and world championships in flowboarding. Flowboarding is essentially snowboarding on an indoor wave machine, with competitors performing tricks on their boards.
First, Callens won the Pro Men’s Division at the FlowTour National Championships on Aug. 24-27 in Oklahoma City. He followed that up by winning the Pro Men’s Division at the World Flowboarding Championships on Sept. 22-24 in Grand Prairie, Texas.
The national championship was Callens’ third, while it was the first time he won the world championship.
Local gymnast to compete at Future Stars Nationals
Ten-year-old Axle Skinner of Everett has qualified for USA Gymnastics’ Future Stars National Championships.
Skinner, who competes out of Alpha Gymnastics in Woodinville, is the reigning state and regional all-around champion for Level 4 boys. He qualified for nationals by earning a qualifying score at the Region 2 Future Stars evaluation event held last month in Lacey. It is rare for a Level 4 athlete to qualify for Future Stars Nationals.
Skinner now travels this week to the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, to pit himself against the top 10-year-olds in the country. USA Gymnastics uses the event to select its Junior National Development Team.
Skinner will spend four days training at the the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center. The national competition takes place Friday.
Morin reaches round of 16 at U21 beach worlds
Lake Stevens High School graduate Samaya Morin, now a junior on the Arizona State beach volleyball team, teamed with Stanford’s Taylor Wilson to reach the round of 16 at the women’s 2023 FIVB U21 Beach World Championships last week in Roi Et, Thailand.
Morin and Wilson, went 3-0 in the main draw, defeating teams from Lithuania, Morocco and Poland in straight sets. That qualified Morin and Wilson for the round of 16, where they lost to a team from Thailand 15-21, 22-20, 16-14.
Skoog named MSC Runner of the Year
Jackson High School graduate Joseph Skoog, now a junior on the Bethel University men’s cross country team, was named the Mid-South Conference Runner of the Year after winning the conference title on Nov. 3 in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Skoog completed the 8-kilometer race in a time of 23 minutes, 1.3 seconds, which was 21 seconds faster than the runner-up.
Skoog was later one of 85 individuals selected for the NAIA Men’s Cross Country National Championship, which takes place Friday in Vancouver, Washington.
Drought earns All-Ivy recognition
Kamiak High School graduate Connor Drought, now a senior on the Cornell University men’s soccer team, was named first-team All-Ivy League.
Drought, who plays left back, started 14 of the Big Red’s 15 games this season, registering one goal and three assists. He helped Cornell finish the season 8-4-3.
This was the second straight year Drought was named first-team All-Ivy.
Gabalis receives weekly honor
Archbishop Murphy High School graduate Victor Gabalis, now a sophomore quarterback on the Tarleton State University football team, was named the United Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the weekend of Nov. 4.
Gabalis was 15-for-19 passing for 389 yards and four touchdowns in a 59-17 victory over Stephen F. Austin. He also ran for a score.
Gabalis finished the season 164-for-301 for 2,492 yards and 18 touchdowns as he led the Texans to an 8-3 record. The eight victories are the most in school history as an NCAA Division I program.
