Community roundup: Everett H.S. alum breaks own UW record

Plus, college baseball and softball have begun with locals earning early awards, Jake Luton signs a deal and more.

Jayden White padded his own record.

The Everett High School graduate, who’s now a sophomore on the University of Washington men’s track and field team, broke his own indoor school record in the weight throw over the weekend at the Husky Classic in Seattle.

White tossed the 35-pound ball 73 feet, 11.75 inches to win the event. He bettered the school record he set last year by more than two feet.

The throw moved him up to No. 5 in the NCAA this season in the weight throw. He placed 10th in the weight throw at the NCAA Indoor Championship last year, earning second-team All-American honors.

De Jesus named preseason All-Sun Belt

Jackson High School graduate Iyanla De Jesus, now a junior on the Coastal Carolina University softball team, was named to the All-Sun Belt Conference preseason team as a designated player. De Jesus is coming off a season in which she batted .254 with two home runs and 12 RBI in 33 games, while she also pitched in 21 games, going 5-8 with a 5.96 ERA.

So far this season De Jesus is scorching at the plate, batting 8-for-17 with a pair of homers and seven RBI in five games.

Dedrick receives preseason softball recognition

Everett High School graduate Megan Dedrick, now a graduate shortstop on the Loyola Marymount University softball team, was named to the preseason All-West Coast Conference team. Dedrick is coming off a season in which she batted .252 in 41 games and was named first-team All-WCC. She is batting .267 through six games so far this season.

Linscott earns Player of the Week award

Lakewood High School graduate Sam Linscott, now a senior outfielder on the Lewis-Clark State baseball team, was named the Cascade Collegiate Conference Baseball Player of the Week for Feb. 7-13. Linscott batted 7-for-11 in three games, notching five RBI and four stolen bases.

Linscott is now batting .522 through 12 games and is 10-for-10 in stolen bases.

Chisman receives NWAC basketball honor

Stanwood High School graduate Madison Chisman, now a sophomore forward on the Whatcom Community College women’s basketball team, was named the Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week for Jan. 31 – Feb. 6. Chisman averaged 22.0 points and 4.5 rebounds as the Orcas scored victories over Skagit Valley and Shoreline.

Chisman ranks sixth in NWAC in scoring at 16.4 points per game. She’s led Whatcom to a 14-1 record and first place in the North Region.

Luton signs futures contract with NFL’s Jaguars

Marysville Pilchuck High School graduate Jake Luton has returned to the NFL franchise that drafted him, as the quarterback signed a futures contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Luton was originally selected by the Jaguars in the sixth round of the 2020 draft out of Oregon State, and he went on to start three games as a rookie. He was cut by the Jaguars just before the start of last season and ended up with the Seattle Seahawks, spending time on both the active roster and the practice squad before being released. He finished the season on the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad.

Luton joins Trevor Lawrence and C.J. Beathard as quarterbacks on Jacksonville’s roster.
