Community roundup: Local lacrosse player named All-American

Plus, Monroe brothers earn taekwondo medals, Whidbey athlete claims national steeplechase title and more.

Sophie Mato is an All-American.

The 14-year-old girls lacrosse player from Lake Stevens was named to the 2021 Under Armour All-America All-Tournament team. The tournament, which featured top players grouped into teams from 12 regions across the country, took place July 28-Aug. 1 in Baltimore.

Mato, a rising ninth grader at Cavelero Mid-High School, played goalie for the West team in the Girls Command Division — West consisted of players from Washington, Oregon and California, while the Command Division was for players in the high school graduating classes of 2024 and 2025. Mato led the division in saves. She was one of 11 players selected to the Girls Command Division’s All-Tournament team.

Monroe siblings earn taekwondo medals

Brothers Ivan and Peter Sokolenko, who attend Monroe High School, came away with taekwondo sparring medals from the 2021 AAU Olympic Games, which were held July 28 – Aug. 7 in Houston.

Ivan Sokolenko, a rising senior, took gold in the Junior (ages 15-17) Male 78-and-over-kilogram division. Peter Sokolenko, a rising sophomore, earned silver in the Junior Male 59-kilogram division.

Both brothers, who train at Master Ji’s Taekwondo in Monroe, advanced to the USA Taekwondo National Championships, which took place Aug. 4-8 in San Antonio, where Ivan Sokolenko won a bronze medal.

South Whidbey grad wins national steeplechase title

Kaia Swegler Richmond, a recent graduate of South Whidbey High School, earned a national championship when she won the 2,000-meter steeplechase in the girls ages 17-18 division at the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships held July 26-Aug. 1 in Jacksonville, Florida.

Swegler Richmond won the race in a time of 7 minutes, 26.14 seconds, which was more than 10 seconds faster than the rest of the field. She won despite not having a steeplechase track to train on.

Swegler Richmond will compete collegiately in both track and cross country at Concordia University in Nebraska starting this fall.

Three locals advance in Drive, Chip and Putt competition

Three Snohomish County residents are one step away from the national Drive, Chip and Putt competition thanks to their efforts at the Sub-Regional Qualifier held Aug. 10 at The Home Course in DuPont.

Mukilteo’s Kai Glenn placed first in the Boys 10-11 division, Everett’s Jairo Sanchez-Godinez placed first in the Boys 7-9 division and Mill Creek’s Jacob Kang placed second in the Boys 14-15 division. The top two in each division qualified for the Regional Qualifier, which takes place Sept. 26 at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, California.

Three others earned alternate spots for finishing third or fourth, those being Mukilteo’s Heaven Kim and Brier’s Cailyn Choi in the Girls 14-15 division, as well as Everett’s Helaina Soterakopoulos in the Girls 7-9 division.
