Five youth golfers from Everett Golf & Country are playing for a chance to go to nationals.
EG&CC’s Maverick Stocker, Jackson Dammann, Nash Echelbarger, Sarah Dyer and John Schmidt are part of the 13-under Seattle Metro All Stars team that won the Pacific Northwest Section Championship of the PGA Jr. League.
Playing at Eagle Crest Golf Course in Redmond, Oregon, on Aug. 17, Seattle finished with a team score of 101. That tied with the Spokane All Stars for first, with Seattle winning via the tiebreaker.
Seattle advanced to the Region 11 Championship, which takes place this weekend at Canyon Springs Golf Course in Twin Falls, Idaho. If Seattle wins that tournament, then it advances to the National Championship, which takes place Oct. 4-8 at Fields Ranch West in Frisco, Texas.
Kitahara, Uderitz help Defiance to division title
Edmonds-Woodway High School graduate Sota Kitahara and Snohomish High School graduate Hal Uderitz played vital roles in helping the Tacoma Defiance claim the MLS Next Pro’s Pacific Division championships and advance to the playoffs with a 4-0 victory over Timbers2 on Monday in Tukwila.
Kitahara, a midfielder, opened the scoring just two minutes into the contest when his shot from distance took a deflection and found its way into the net. Uderitz, a defender, captained the squad and marshaled a defense that pitched a shutout.
Tacoma (12-5-8) clinched the division title with three games remaining in the regular season. The Defiance repeated as division champs.
Limar scores touchdown in collegiate debut
Lake Stevens High School graduate Jayden Limar, now a freshman running back on the University of Oregon football team, made an instant impact at the college level as he scored a touchdown in his debut.
Limar, a true freshman, scored the Ducks’ final touchdown in Saturday’s 81-7 victory over Portland State in Eugene, Ore. Limar took a handoff up the middle, broke through the line, then scampered 17 yards for the score.
Limar, a true freshman, finished with eight carries for 51 yards and four receptions for 24 yards.
Collins transfers to High Point
Glacier Peak High School graduate Aaliyah Collins will be playing for her third collegiate women’s basketball program in three years after she transferred from Grand Canyon to High Point.
Collins, a junior point guard, spent last season at Grand Canyon, where she averaged 8.7 points, 2.8 assists and 2.8 steals for a Lopes team that finished 21-10 and reached the semifinals of the Western Athletic Conference tournament. The season before she averaged 14.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.4 steals for Chicago State, earning second-team All-WAC recognition.
High Point plays in the NCAA Division I Big South Conference.
Morin transfers to Arizona State
Lake Stevens High School graduate Samaya Morin, a collegiate beach volleyball standout, has transferred from Grand Canyon to Arizona State.
Morin, a junior, helped lead Grand Canyon to last season’s NCAA tournament as she went 19-1 on Court 2, earning the AVCA Top Flight Award in the No. 2 spot. She followed Kristen Rohr, who stepped down as Grand Canyon’s coach to become the coach at Arizona State.
Both Snohomish County’s stars from Grand Canyon transferred this summer, with Everett native and King’s High School graduate Alli Hansen joining Florida State earlier in the offseason.
Reeck receives weekly GNAC award
Lake Stevens High School graduate Ashley Reeck, now a sophomore on the Western Washington University women’s cross country team, was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference’s Women’s Runner of the Week for Aug. 28-Sept. 3.
Reeck won the UPS Invitational on Saturday in Lakewood, completing the 5-kilometer course in a time of 17 minutes, 41.04 seconds. Reeck won the race by more than 25 seconds, and she led a dominating Vikings team performance as Western had the top 14 finishers.
Olson earns NWAC weekly honor
Meadowdale High School graduate Avary Olson, now a sophomore goalkeeper on the Everett Community College men’s soccer team, was named the Northwest Athletic Conference’s Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for Aug. 21-27.
Olson posted two shutouts as the Trojans scored a pair of 7-0 victories against Portland and Pierce at the NWAC Friendlies in Tukwila.
Olson has helped Everett start the season 5-0, outscoring its opponents 31-4.
EdC has new men’s soccer, softball coaches
Edmonds College has new coaches for its men’s soccer and softball teams.
Michael Ochoa was hired as the head coach of the men’s team. Ochoa was an assistant with the Tritons last season, and before that he coached the Edmonds-Woodway High School boys team for eight years. He takes over for Ben Kososkie, who stepped down to become the head coach at Indiana University Northwest.
Antionette Watson takes over the softball team on an interim basis. Watson, who was a standout catcher for the Tritons and served as an assistant coach in 2018-19, returned this season as associate head coach, then was elevated after Grizz Stevens stepped down for personal reasons.
