COMMUNITY ROUNDUP: Powerlifter wins gold medal

Powerlifter Ken Gack of Everett won the gold medal at the USA Powerlifting Masters National Championships held April 30 through May 2 in Killeen, Texas.

The event is for competitors 40 and older.

Gack competed in the 100-kilogram (220 pounds) weight class and in the 40-44 age division.

Gack, who turned 40 in March, finished with lifts of 661 pounds in the squat, 501 pounds in the bench press, and 617 pounds in the dead lift. His final attempt in the dead lift was enough to move him into first place overall.

Gack’s finish earned him a place on the United States team that’s scheduled to compete in the International Powerlifting Federation Masters World Championships from Sept. 27 to Oct. 2 in Pilsen, Czech Republic.

Everett CC runner sets record

Emmanuel Contreras, a freshman at Everett Community College, set the school record in the men’s 800-meter race Saturday at the Ken Shannon Invite at Husky Stadium in Seattle.

Contreras, from Yakima, finished in a time of 1 minute, 52.99 seconds to win his section. He bettered the old record of 1:53.20 set in 1976 by Doug Dalum.

Among other notable performances Saturday, Everett freshman Seth Pierson posted a time of 3:56.40 in finishing second in his section in the 1,500. His time is the fastest by a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges runner this season. Everett holds the top three spots in the NWAACC in the event with Pierson, Contreras (3:57.62) and freshman Drew Larson (3:59.92).

Pierson is from Cashmere. Larson is from Lake Stevens.

Snel signs with Hawaii Hilo

Everett Community College basketball standout Dirk Snel has signed an NCAA letter of intent to play at the University of Hawaii Hilo next season.

Hawaii Hilo coach Jeff Law announced the signing last week.

Snel, a graduate of Cascade High School, led Everett in points, rebounds, assists, and steals this past season and earned All-Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges North Region second-team honors. He averaged 25.4 points per game, the third-highest total in the NWAACC this past season.

Hawaii Hilo posted a 13-13 record in 2009-10. The Vulcans are members of the NCAA Division II Pacific West Conference.
