Washington State accepted a conditional invitation to play in the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Tex., on Dec. 31.
The acceptance is contingent on the Cougars not being selected for a Bowl Championship Series game.
The Cougars’ 26-14 loss to Washington on Saturday dropped Washington State (9-2, 6-2 Pacific-10 Conference) from No. 8 to No. 14 in the BCS standings.
“Our players deserve to play in a bowl game of the Sun Bowl’s status and prestige,” Washington State coach Mike Price said Tuesday. “We are grateful the Sun Bowl has made this offer and (will) still allow us to be involved in possible BCS plans.”
The Sun Bowl features the No. 3 team from the Pac-10 and the No. 5 team from the Big Ten. No announcement has been made on a Big Ten team.
