EvCC names Jeannie Thompson new women’s basketball coach

The hiring came shortly after the announcement that longtime Trojans coach Chet Hovde has retired.

EVERETT — Everett Community College announced Wednesday the hiring of Jeannie Thompson as new women’s basketball coach and the retirement of longtime women’s coach Chet Hovde.

Thompson was previously the head girls basketball coach at Everett High School, her alma matter, for the past two seasons. Prior to leading the Seagulls, Thompson was the head coach at Jackson High School for 10 seasons.

“We are ecstatic to welcome Jeannie to the Trojan Family,” Everett athletic director Garet Studer said in a press release. “Every coach I spoke to in Wesco spoke very highly of Jeannie. She has a great reputation here in Snohomish County, which is important for us to competitively recruit the talent rich area. I’ve had the opportunity to see her coach at Everett High, and the combination of her passion, dedication, knowledge of the game, and ability to connect with the athletes is everything we were looking for in a head coach.”

Hovde is retiring after 34 seasons at the helm for the Trojans. The local coaching icon amassed 451 wins and three North Region championships over that span. Prior to coaching Everett, Hovde spent two seasons as head women’s coach at Edmonds Community College, leading the Tritons to a pair of 20-win seasons.

“Chet has been a fixture of this program for nearly four decades,” Studer said in a press release. “There has been a lot of successes with his teams over the years, but even more important than that was his dedication to all those young women, and the impact that he has had on their lives. The Trojan Nation wishes him and his wife Joan a happy retirement!”
