DETROIT – Ford Field’s turf is made from a mix of sand and pieces of rubber and looks like grass.
Sunday’s game marks the first time the Super Bowl has been played on this kind of surface, produced by Montreal-based FieldTurf.
The turf was installed this month in the Silverdome, which the Steelers are using for pre-Super Bowl practice. It’s already in place at the Lions’ practice facility in Allen Park, which the Seahawks are using.
Both teams are already familiar with the surface, which is installed in the Seahawks’ stadium and practice facility and in the Steelers’ practice facility.
In Detroit, the turf has an automotive twist. The Ford family, which owns the Lions, told FieldTurf to use reclaimed rubber from recalled Firestone tires at both Ford Field and the practice facility.
