Career accomplishments: Sumners reached the pinnacle of American figure skating in the early 1980s. She was the world junior champion in 1980, the United States champion in 1982, 1983 and 1984, and the 1983 world champion. She received the silver medal at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, narrowly finishing second to Katarina Witt of East Germany. She was elected to the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 2001.
