EVERETT – The Everett Hawks announced Thursday that coach Dan Maciejczak has resigned.
Maciejczak resides in Rapid City, S.D. and in a press release the team attributed his departure to the difficulty associated with being separated from his family during football season.
The press release credited Maciejczak for his role in the team’s 15-1 record in 2005 and said the search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
Phone calls by The Herald to Maciejczak and the Hawks late Thursday were not returned.
The Hawks played their inaugural season in the National Indoor Football League. After averaging more than 4,200 fans for home games, the team – which is owned by Buffalo Bills defensive lineman Sam Adams – recently left the NIFL and joined arenafootball2 as an expansion team for the 2006 season.
After coaching at Billings of the NIFL in 2004, where he led the team to a 12-4 record, Maciejczak was hired by Adams to guide Everett in its first season in the NIFL.
Under Maciejczak the Hawks took the NIFL – and many Snohomish County fans – by storm, winning 15 consecutive games before losing to eventual league champion Tri-Cities in the playoffs.
Former Everett defensive standout Travis Salter, who reiterated on Thursday he is retired from football, praised Maciejczak.
“Magic’s a good coach, no doubt about it, he always had us prepared,” Salter said. “Most those players who came out to Everett did so to play for Magic. As far as recruiting, you couldn’t ask for anyone better.”
