LAKE STEVENS – Maize Todd drove in Taryn Scott in the second inning and Stephanie Buxton singled in Ashley Jensen as Lake Stevens broke out early in a 5-0 shutout over Monroe during Monday’s Western Conference North showdown.

The victory improved Lake Stevens to 2-0 in league and 4-1 overall. Monroe evened its record to 1-1 and 1-1.

“We’ve been playing some good softball lately,” Lake Stevens coach Margo Leiter said. “We played in a tournament last weekend and had some team bonding. It’s been a fun way to start the season.”

Scott, who gave up five hits in seven shutout innings, picked up her first victory of the season.

After jumping out to an ealry 2-0 lead, Lake Stevens, which collected nine hits, added a run in the third inning and two in the sixth inning. A Scott line-drive in the third inning scored Lindsay Freitag, who reached base on a triple.

Whitney Cochran and Gina Carbonatto knocked in a pair of runs in the sixth inning to roundout the scoring.

“We haven’t had many games,” Leiter said. “But I think we have a pretty strong batting order.”
