M-P hands Monroe its first defeat

MARYSVILLE – Monroe will have to wait for another day to clinch a 4A District 1 playoff berth.

Marysville-Pilchuck handed Monroe its first loss of the season with a 2-1 victory in eight innings in a Wesco North game Wednesday.

Like the last time the two teams met, it came down to the pitching.

Nancianne Burman pitched eight innings, scattering five hits, allowing one walk and registering six strikeouts to out-pitch Ashly Forsberg, who went 71/3 innings with 10 strikeouts and two walks.

“Both pitchers were controlling the hitters and not putting any one on,” Marysville-Pilchuck coach Steve Rollins said.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Skyler Peterson (2-for-4) reached base on an error by the center fielder and was sacrificed to second by Jessica Hinricksen. Then Courtney Perrine (1-for-3) doubled in the winning run.
