Meridian twins too much for Sultan

SULTAN – With about 13 minutes remaining in regulation, Meridian’s Jennifer Johnson hit a shot that ricocheted off a Sultan defender and into the net to give the Lady Trojans a 4-3 victory over Sultan in a battle of the top teams in the North Cascades Conference.

Going into the game, the teams were tied for first with 4-0 records.

“This was a terrific soccer game,” Sultan coach Andrea Fuller said. “(Meridian) outscored us, but they didn’t outplay us.”

Meridian’s 1-2 punch of twin sisters Katie and Jennifer Johnson proved to be the difference in the game. While her sister got the game-winner, Katie Johnson scored two goals.

“She (Katie Johnson) is their playmaker,” Fuller said. “We’d contain her for 20 minutes, then she’d get free and score a goal.”

Heather Howard scored twice for Sultan.
