Veteran running back Clinton Portis will work out for the Seahawks, according to Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network. LaCanfora says Portis, who turns 30 tomorrow, isn’t expected to sign right now, meaning this is likely the Seahawks just taking a look at a player who is available to see if he has anything left in the tank.
Portis, a two-time Pro Bowler, has missed significant playing time the past two seasons, and was released by Washington in February. While Portis is a high-profile name, it is important not to read too much into every player workout the Seahawks conduct. Plenty of these happen that don’t get reported, and oftentimes the player isn’t signed. Often is is just a team doing it’s due diligence should they be in need of a player later in the season because of injuries. As Pete Carroll pointed out yesterday when asked about the visit of OL Andre Gurode, these visits happen quite frequently this time of year.
Portis, it’s worth pointing out, is the cousin of Josh Portis, an undrafted rookie who is currently Seattle’s No. 3 quarterback.
