With Jeremy Lane headed to injured reserve/designated to return, and with Tharold Simon recovering from minor knee surgery, the Seahawks were expected to add help at cornerback, and they did just that Monday, signing former Carolina Panthers cornerback Josh Thomas.
Thomas, a fifth-round pick in 2011, played in 38 games over three seasons with the Panthers, starting 10. He played as an outside cornerback with the Panthers, but said he is ready to play the nickel spot if that’s what Seattle needs (Lane had been Seattle’s starting nickel corner).
“I’m welcome and open to any position they offer,” he said.
Seahawks fans may not know Thomas, but they certainly remember a play involving him, Jermaine Kearse’s game-winning catch in Carolina. Thomas actually had pretty good coverage on Kearse on the play, but was just the victim of a near perfect throw and catch.
“What I remember is 15 at the very end of the game, he came up and got the ball over me,” Thomas said when asked about that game.
