EVERETT — The momentum pendulum will swing back in forth during the course of a hockey game, and dynamic offensive team’s like Portland can hurl it back the other direction in a false swoop.
That’s what happened in the third period, as the Winterhawks potted a pair of goal within a minute span to erase the Silvertips’ two-goal lead, but Everett hung on and topped Portland, 3-2, in a shootout at Angel of the Winds Arena on Wednesday.
“The second period was pretty even, it was a high intensity period,” Silvertips goaltender Dustin Wolf said. “The third they came out strong and gave it to us and we just came back in overtime and won the shootout.”
Connor Dewar and Riley Sutter scored shootout goals while Dustin Wolf made a pair of saves to help the Silvertips (15-6-0-0) and claim two points against their U.S. Division rival.
“Wolfie (Wolf) was solid for us in net all night and gave us a chance,” Williams said. “And a couple of your leaders were able to bury those shots.
Everett extended its winning streak to five games. The Silvertips have won 9 of their past 11 and are 7-2 against the U.S. Division.
Dewar put the Silvertips up 1-0 and extended his point streak to 11 games 2:27 into the game. A screen from Bryce Kindopp in front of Winterhawks’ netminder Shane Farkas allowed Dewar’s wrister to sneak past his blocker side for a power-play goal.
Kindopp soon tallied his own power-play goal, his eighth of the season, at the 7:35 mark, as the 19-year-old fed Dewar with a backhanded pass and tapped in the rebound off of the one-timer from Everett’s captain to put the Silvertips up 2-0.
Portland generated plenty of chances after a lackluster opening period, but went into the second period scoreless after open shots in the slot whacked the boards after whizzing past Wolf or clanged iron and were cleared by the Silvertips.
Everett’s luck eventually ran out.
Reece Newkirk capitalized on a bad turnover by Everett in its own offensive zone 3:14 into the period, and Ryan Hughes tacked on another 41 seconds later on a wrist shot past Wolf’s glove side.
On Portland’s second goal, the Silvertips’ fourth line was caught on the ice after an icing and Portland countered with its top line, with Hughes, Cody Glass and Joachim Blichfeld.

“We just hit the reset button,” Kindopp said of the message on the bench after Portland’s comeback. “That’s what we talked about. We just knew they were a skilled team and just watched their ‘D’, because they like to come in a lot.”
Wolf (14-6-0-0) stopped 39-of-41 shots for Everett in the win.
Portland’s Farkas (11-5-0-2) made 42 saves in the loss.
