BELLINGHAM – In an early tennis showdown between league leaders, Snohomish used some solid play by its lower seeds on Monday to take a 4-3 victory at Sehome and claim first place alone in the Western Confernce 4A North Division.

“This was definitely a big win for us,” said Snohomish coach Dick Jansen. “It was nice to win on the road and our lower seeds really came through for us.”

After Sehome took the top two singles matches, Snohomish’s J.J. Vancil defeated Jake Holderman 6-1, 6-4 in No. 3 singles and Mike Marshall evened the match with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Pat Zemel at No. 4.

“That number four singles was a big match,” said Jansen, “and Mike Marshall really did an outstanding job of battling back from a set down to get the win.”

Sehome regained the lead with a win at No. 1 doubles, but Snohomish’s Sam Whitney and Ty Christensen pulled out a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win against Rick Chronister and Nathan Spencer at No. 2 doubles to once again even the match.

“I think the No. 2 doubles may have been the pivotal match,” said Jansen. “Our guys hung in there and found a way to win and gave us a shot.”

Snohomish finished off the key victory with a 6-2, 6-4 win by Ian Sahlberg and Trevor Pratt at No. 3 doubles.
