Sprinter leads Spartans to track victory

STANWOOD — Despite a nagging hamstring injury, junior Kendra Monroe was able to account for 15 of Stanwood’s 71.5 points in Thursday’s Western Conference North girls track victory.

Marysville-Pilchuck finished second with 63 points followed by third-place Snohomish with 54.5 points.

Monroe, which missed the first two weeks of practice due to the injury, won the 100-meter hurdles and the long jump for the Spartans.

"She’s (Monroe) been hurt for most of the season, Stanwood coach Paul Johnson said. "She’s been a little behind because of her injury, but she is certainly one of our key athletes."

Monroe also placed second in the 300 hurdles behind Snohomish’s Carly Osness and third in the triple jump behind Serissa Stova of Marysville-Pilchuck and teammate and winner Kim Pence.

The Spartans earned 30 points with 10 second-place finishes and seven points with seven third-place finishes.

"We had a good meet today," Johnson said. "We have some strength across the board and I think when it is dry out we can really start competing."

Chelsea Bradley, who won the 100, was one of eight first-place finishers for Marysville-Pilchuck. Other Tomahawk winners included Karrisa Clevish (javelin), Brittany Berg (pole vault), Mandi Bruns (400) and Stefania Green (shot put).

Lucy Miller led third-place Snohomish with victories in the 1,600 and 3,200.
