I remember one of my first Wesco-related writing assignments, about seven years ago, was to write a preview about the Mountlake Terrace High School boys basketball team.
One player my editor asked me to interview was a senior named Ryan Strieby. At the time, Strieby was a tall, fairly lanky guy who was one of Terrace’s top contributors and one of the better players in the league. But, since I didn’t know much about Strieby at the time, I never would have guessed how much he would go on to accomplish off the basketball court, in a baseball uniform.
These days, Strieby is tearing up the competition as a hard-hitting first baseman for the Erie SeaWolves, the Double-A affiliate in the Detroit Tigers organization. The 6-foot-5, 235-pounder is batting .310 with 17 home runs and 53 RBI in 75 gamest this season for Erie.
He was recently named the Eastern League Player of the Week (for the week ending July 12 after he hit .455 with one double, two home runs, eight runs scored and five RBI in six games. With performances like that, Strieby continues to impress folks in the Tigers’ decision-makers.
It seems the Mountlake Terrace grad — who also played for Edmonds Community College and the University of Kentucky, where he had a record-setting season — will end up in the majors sooner rather than later.
