As an infant, Alden suffered from intractable epilepsy, which causes uncontrollable seizures. He underwent surgery that involved disconnecting the right and left halves of his brain and removing some tissue. His family agreed to donate those tissues for research. Now, that research is helping identify possible causes and treatments for intractable epilepsy.
