A familiar hamburger chain name to many people in the region, Herfy’s Burgers has been popping up with increasing frequency around the Puget Sound.
The newest — Herfy’s Burgers #14 — opened in Edmonds late last year.
The original chain, which populated the region before national chains started coming to the Northwest, has not been resurrected. The original owners of Herfy’s Burgers opened their first restaurant in 1963 and closed the last unit a few years ago when they retired.
The new chain of restaurants is using the logo and name of the original but has a little bit of a different focus. The original chain’s menu focused on burgers, while the new Herfy’s has a much expanded menu.
You can order up a hamburger a number of different ways. First you have to decide on whether to have single, double or triple patties. Then depending on your tastes you can opt for a cheeseburger, bacon cheese burger, bacon sourdough burger, mushroom burger or onion burger (fresh or grilled). A whole wheat bun is available.
Other burger options include chicken, chili, garden, teriyaki (beef or chicken), shredded BBQ (beef, chicken or pork), cod fish, halibut, salmon or catfish.
Herfy’s also has an extensive seafood menu that includes shrimp, oysters, clams and scallops in addition to codfish, halibut and salmon.
Other items not normally seen at most burger establishments include philly cheese steak (beef or chicken), french dip, grilled cheese sandwich and hot wings.
The side orders/finger food section of the menu features fried zucchini, fried mushrooms, mozzarella cheese sticks, jo jos and Jalapeno poppers.
Be sure to check out the special sauce, which we suspect was a mixture of catsup and mayonnaise. It’s a great dip for your french fries and onion rings.
No meal would be complete without a milkshake and Herfy’s offers more than 25 different flavors. Some of the more unusual concoctions include peach, pineapple, mint and marshmallow.
There are currently 12 Herfy’s around King, Snohomish and Pierce counties and based on how busy Herfy’s Burgers #14 was during a recent lunchtime excursion, it’s likely the new Herfy’s will continue to grow in numbers.
