SHORELINE — Run like Hetz.

That is what the sign read that hung near the finish line Friday at the 4A bi-district track championships at Shoreline Stadium.

Hetz is Kamiak’s sophomore sprinter, Heather Hetzer, who won three titles for the second year in a row.

Hetzer blew away the field in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes, matching her performance from a year ago.

In the 100, Hetzer was the last runner out of the blocks, but made up the ground on the rest of the field by the 20-meter mark and used her long strides to stave off the field.

Hetzer, who stands 5-feet, 11 inches, owned the state’s fastest time in the 400 with a 57.33, but Friday she shattered her mark with a superb 56.43, in cold but otherwise great running conditions.

In the 400, Hetzer had already made up the stagger at the 200 mark and just poured it on, amazing the entire crowd with her margin of victory on the backstretch.

"I was a little bit tired after the 400. My hip is sore, but by the 200 it is usually pretty much used up," said Hetzer after her third and final victory. "I used every last ounce of energy in that 200. It feels good to know I can run those times with all those injuries."

Last year at state, Hetzer finished sixth in the 100, third in the 200 and fourth in the 400. Her goal this season is to win a title in any of the above races.

The Snohomish Panthers won the team competition going away. They finished 32.5 points ahead of the next best team.

Panther freshman Lucy Miller took first in the 1,600. Marysville-Pilchuck’s Camille Connelly gave her a race with 220 meters to go, but Miller kicked in her afterburners.

"I saw her right there and I was like ‘Wow! She is really picking it up.’ and I decided to go for it," said Miller.

The top four finishers in each event qualified for Star Track, the state track championships to be held May 25-26 at the the Lincoln Bowl in Tacoma.
