Lake Stevens Bank manager Charles Cockburn stood his ground and spoiled an after-hours holdup. Refusing to hand over money, he followed the would-be robber to his car, got the license number and notified the State Patrol. The suspect was arrested in Marysville. Other employees there were Pearl McMillin and Hazel Nelson.

To meet the fast-growing population of Everett and vicinity, the school board called for bids on a new View Ridge Elementary School. To be constructed just off Dogwood Drive with approaches from Alder and 50th streets, it would be the first school west of Forest Park.

Don Uglem, executive director of the Snohomish County Boys’ Clubs, received the Boys’ Club of America’s Tall Timber Professional Award for 1978. The annual award was presented to the most outstanding Boys’ Club professional in the region of Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska.

Richard Deming, city administrator for Marysville, was elected president of the Washington City Managers Association in Kennewick. Deming was vice president for 1978. He had come to Marysville in July after holding that post in Normandy Park in King County.
