Football officials to reward players with scholarships

They hit hard on the football field, but they also make an impact in other areas.
Tonight, five local football players will receive something in return for their hard work on and off the field at the 22nd Annual Snohomish County Football Officials Hall of Fame Award Banquet.
The SCFOHF committee has sifted through 41 applications from 21 high schools. Three senior athletes – one more than in previous years – will receive $1,000 college scholarships after the banquet begins, 6:30 tonight at the Everett Golf and Country Club. Two others will be granted $500.
The winners are selected based on scholastic accomplishments, athletic participation, leadership and community activities. All of the applicants are treated to a steak dinner and receive a plaque. Local businesses and community members sponsor the event and fund much of the scholarship money. One lineman and one skill-position player from each of the 20 high school football programs in Snohomish County (plus South Whidbey) are nominated.
Most of the nominees have grade point averages well above a 3.0. Many are heavily involved in the community, helping at food banks, hospitals, retirement homes or with the homeless.
There are Eagle Scouts, youth sports coaches, Special Olympics coaches, camp counselors and Sunday school teachers among the nominees. One applicant – Stanwood’s Todd Hinderman – gave the committee 58 pages of information to consider.
