Kimberly Beard leads King’s girls to 1A state track title

The King’s girls track & field team won its fifth consecutive Class 1A state title Saturday at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima.

Kimberly Beard led the way with dominant wins in the discus and shot put, along with a runner-up finish in the javelin. The senior uncorked a winning throw of 153 feet, 5 inches to win the event by 35 feet. Her mark of the day — 135 feet — would have won the event by a significant margin. Her final attempt in a standout career was the state’s best among all classifications this season.

Led by sprinter Jeshua Singletary, the King’s boys played fourth.

Singletary took second in the 100 meters, third in the 200, third in the long jump and anchored the Knights’ 400-meter relay team to third in state.
